Ali Baba is a Middle Eastern restaurant located on Washington street in Hoboken. This place has been there for so many years. We often ordered but it has been a while since we had dinner there and, one day, we went as I really wanted to try their couscous. This is where we heard about Barbes, a Moroccan and French place that opened several weeks ago few blocks from there, that has an amazing food, especially the tagines and couscous. And I admit that the couscous at Ali Baba does not measure up to it: I tried their lamb couscous that was just ok. The lamb was very good, perfectly cooked, but it is the semolina itself that I did not like.
Jodi, that time, got the falafel platter that is so good: their hummus and babaganoush (that we got for appetizer also) are the best in town, and the falafel are delicious.
We finished our meal with a baklava that was perfect, not dry, slightly crispy with enough honey, as well as a mint tea that paired well with this dessert.
We had a good time at Ali Baba: the staff was very friendly and we had a decent dinner in a relaxed atmosphere. However, I would not go there for the couscous and would more go for their vegetarian dishes or grilled meat.
Enjoy (I did)!
