I discovered Black Barn few years ago and I have to say: this is one of my favorite places in the city for brunch or dinner. Their menu is mouth watering with so many interesting options that you would want to order every single dish. On top of that, you sit in a place with a relaxed atmosphere and beautiful decor that matches the name of the place, i.e. a barn, but without the smell!
So, the last time we went, we tried the following:
As a cocktail, I drank the American Pharaoh, a whiskey drink (Glenmoramgie X) mixed with espresso, coffee in cocktails, especially Martini being a bit of a trend in the past year, reinventing a bit the classic Irish coffee.
As an appetizer, I could not resist ordering their olive oil braised octopus that was served with a delicious roasted pepper hummus, fresno chili fennel, and a preserved lemon and olive gremolata. This was superb: the octopus was tender, with a nice char and I loved eating it with the gremolata that gave a nice acidity to the dish.
Jodi got their wild mushroom toast with robiola, taleggio and Parmesan, on a sourdough that was a delicious appetizer, with a nice amount of toppings.
For her main, she got the grilled corn and kale salad, without bacon, that had tomato, avocado (a nice portion), radicchio, baked ricotta, smothered by a an herb buttermilk dressing (smothered but not overdressed).
On my side, I had their BBQ beef ribs. It was made with a chipotle-orange rub and served with shoestring fries that were nicely crispy but definitely the kind where your hand rather than a fork is to be used to eat them…The ribs were fantastic, literally falling off the bone, slightly spicy, with the cucumber salad that came with it giving a cooling effect. This is a must have for sure!
For dessert, we shared their apple cider donuts that came with a caramel sauce. These donuts were superb: perfectly made, I could have eaten more than what they served and it did not even need the caramel sauce.
So, this was an amazing dinner. Black Barn is a great place and I will go back for sure. You should too!
Enjoy (I did)!
